Electrotechnical Engineer (IST- Technical University of Lisbon ) , Ph.D. in Physics (Univ. of Chicago).  

Coordinator of Research at INETI- Lisbon, Renewable Energies Department (until Feb. 2006). Founder, partner and/or CSO of several companies in the area of Renewable Energies, in particular in Solar Energy.

He was Full Guest Professor, Physics Department (IST-Lisbon) and was also founder and twice President of CCE- Centro para a Conservação de Energia (the then acting Portuguese Energy Agency), founder and twice President of SPES- Sociedade Portuguesa de Energia Solar, the Portuguese Section of ISES, and President of ACTD- Associação para a Ciência, Tecnologia e Desenvolvimento.

 
Presently, he is Chairman of the Renewable Energies Chair at the University of Evora and President of the Board of IPES- the Portuguese Solar Energy Institute. He is also the Director of IIFA (Institute for Research and Advanced Education), the Doctoral School of the University of Evora.

He has done extensive research in Solar Energy as a specialist in Optics and Thermodynamics.

Author of a book on RE and Energy Efficiency and of  a large number (>230) of scientific publications in areas like Non Imaging Optics applied to Solar Thermal, Solar Thermal Electricity Photovoltaics, Illumination and  Photocatalysis, Solar Irradiation Statistics, Solar Thermal Systems Design and Engineering, Domestic Hot Water and Heating and Cooling Systems, Absorption and Adsorption Cooling Equipment, Solar Drying, Solar Ponds, Solar Cooking , Greenhouses Heating.
